NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham junior Whitley Moody was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week Monday, while Dayton junior Amelia Moore was selected as Defensive Player of the Week. Davidson freshman Emma Slusser was named Rookie of the Week. The awards are for matches played from Aug. 30 – Sept. 4.
Moody was critical to Fordham's 4-0 week, posting double-digit kills in every match and one double-double. The junior racked up 54 kills, 35 digs, five blocks, and four aces in the wins over St. Francis (Brooklyn), Fairleigh Dickinson, Niagara and Penn. She had a 15-kill, 14-dig double-double versus FDU, and she registered 15 kills while hitting .394 in a sweep of Niagara. An outside hitter from San Jose, Calif., Moody averaged 3.86 kills, 2.50 digs, 0.36 blocks, 4.32 points and 0.29 aces across 14 sets, hitting .203.
A middle blocker from Ocean Springs, Miss., Moore led the Flyers with 1.67 blocks per set and was second with 3.58 points per set over the weekend as Dayton took part in the GT Invitational, hosted by fifth-ranked Georgia Tech. In a 3-2 loss to Arizona State on Friday, Moore tallied a career-high 10 blocks (2-8) and then recorded 11 kills in the nightcap against Georgia Tech. In the Flyers' 3-1 win over FIU on Saturday, Moore had seven blocks and six digs to go with a season-high 13 kills while swinging at .458.
Davidson's rookie right side helped the 'Cats to a 2-1 weekend, where she totaled 35 kills, including back-to-back double-digit performances (10 vs. Lindenwood, career-high 17 vs. New Mexico State). Slusser, a Cottage Grove, Minn., native, hit .349 over the weekend while averaging 3.5 kills per set and totaled eight blocks.
