NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference selected Dayton senior Andy Sanchez as the league’s initial Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Duquesne junior Torge Witteborg earned recognition as the Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, Flyers freshman teammate Gabriel Kringen picked up the conference's first Rookie of the Week laurels for the season. The awards were announced Monday following the conclusion of the opening week of contests played Aug. 25-28.
A product of Caracas, Venezuela, Sanchez led the Flyers to the 2022 Ohio State Wolstein Classic Championship with two goals and two assists in wins over Cal Poly and South Carolina last weekend. The senior midfielder posted a goal and two assists, one of which included the game winner, in Thursday's matchup against Cal Poly before scoring a game-winning goal of his own on Sunday versus the Gamecocks. The senior totaled six shots, four of which were on target.
A junior defender out of Dortmund, Germany, Witteborg logged all 180 minutes in Duquesne's road shutout wins at Michigan and at Canisius, notably scoring his first career goal – and eventually the game-winner – in the 37th minute against the Wolverines. The lone score gave the Dukes their first victory over a school from one of the five autonomy conferences since 2003.
Kringen, a freshman import from Drammen, Norway, scored the game-winning goal in the season-opening win against Cal Poly before adding an assist in the victory over South Carolina on Sunday, helping the Flyers clinch the 2022 Ohio State Wolstein Classic Championship. The midfielder started both games for UD, and was a key part of the attack that outscored opposing teams 9-2 in the back-to-back victories. He totaled three shots, two of which were on target.
