NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Dayton junior Jose Martinez as the league’s Baseball Player of the Week while Davidson junior Bennett Flynn locked down Pitcher laurels. Additionally, Richmond freshman Jake Elbeery collected his first Rookie of the Week distinction as well. The awards were announced Monday following the conclusion of the ninth week of contests played April 18-24.

Martinez, a Puerto Rican import out of Aguas Buenas, managed an even .500 batting average with a .619 on-base percentage over a critical 4-1 stretch for the Flyers, notching eight total hits with a pair of bombs and five RBI, not to mention 10 runs scored himself. Notably, the junior outfielder swiped seven bases as well, including six throughout the weekend sweep of UMass, and even extended his team-best hitting streak out to 14 games.

A product of Mill Valley, Calif., Flynn impressed across a pair of relief efforts last week, tossing 7.1 scoreless innings while surrendering just four hits and two walks en route to a pair of victories. The junior right-hander racked up 13 strikeouts in total, including eight in Sunday’s rubber match win over Rhode Island.

Elbeery, a native of North Andover, Mass., finished 10-for-19 at the plate with five RBI, four runs scored and one walk, posting a final slash line of .526/.550/.526 across a split 2-2 week for the Spiders. Notably, the freshman closed out Richmond’s midweek win over James Madison with a perfect five-for-five mark, driving in two runs and scoring another pair himself.
