Rhode Island Secures 13th Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship Title

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Rhode Island won Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship Sunday, its second straight and 13th title overall, dominating the field with 199 points at the George Mason Fieldhouse.
 
Rhode Island won five events and had top three finishes in 11 other events. Freshman Lucas Plaia earned gold in the 500 meters with a time of 1:03.87, while sophomore Collins Ochs placed first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.34. The Rams 4x800 relay team of Nathan Coogan, Ianique Imboque, Eli Baker, and Collin Ochs placed first with a time of 7:44.89. Freshman Mason Brubaker snatched gold in the pole vault with a mark of 4.80m, while sophomore Orion Joyner placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 14.76.
 
Saint Louis' Toby Gillen, the meet’s Most Outstanding Track Performer, won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:22.51 and placed second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:21.16.  Mason senior Jaylen Simmons, the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer, won the shot put (17.74m) and weight throw (20.29m). Davidson freshman Josh Hardin won the 400 meters with a 48.35 and finished third in the 200 meters (22.05), to claim Most Outstanding Rookie honors. Davidson coach Renny Waldron won the Atlantic 10 Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year award for leading the Wildcats to a second-place finish, their best placing in school history in the A-10 indoor meet
 
Davidson scored 114 points to place second and George Mason tallied 111 points placing third. VCU was fourth in the championship standings with 103 points, followed by Saint Joseph’s with 68 points. La Salle (57) and Saint Louis (55) were sixth and seventh respectively.
 
The Wildcats earned four event wins to place second. Joe Dos Reis took gold in the one mile run with a time of 4:11.44. Freshman Jayden Smith (7.98) won the 60 meter hurdles with junior teammate Cory Gaither (8.05) claiming silver. Hardin's 400 meters win and the 'Cats record-setting distance medley relay time of 9:56.25 from Saturday's first day were the other two wins. The Wildcats also earned a second place finish in the 4x800 relay with a team of Raphael Degenero, Jack Muldoon, Ben Gordon Sniffen, and Owen Drometer, which clocked in with a time of 7:44.89.
 
George Mason won the 4x400 meter relay, with Isaiah Carter, Elijah Brown, Paul McClain and Jarett Flaker earning gold with a time of 3:15.27. George Mason junior, Cason Gardner won the heptathlon with 5,269 points. Garner won the pentathlon high jump (2.00m) and placed top three in every other event. Carer also win the 200 meters for Mason with a time of 21.69.
 
La Salle senior Luke Jaciw-Zurakowsky won the 3,000 meters with a 8:18.84, just shy of the meet record of 8:18.27. His sophomore teammate Liam Rivard clocked a 2:26.00 to take the 1,000 meters gold medal. VCU's JeVon Waller was the 60 meter champion with a 6.80 time.
