FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's team and Rhode Island's men's team lead the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track Championships after Saturday's opening day at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots won three events and collected six medals to score 61.5 points on the women's side, ahead of second-place La Salle (30 points), third-place Dayton (27.5 points) and Massachusetts in fourth at 26.5 points. Rhode Island (23.5 points) was fifth, VCU (20) sixth and George Washington (14) seventh. Richmond, Davidson and Saint Louis rounded out the field.
On the men's side, Rhode Island had five medal performances and won one event to score 66 points, 10 points ahead of second-place George Masons' 56 points. UMass is in third after the first day with 27 points, and VCU is fourth with 27. La Salle (23 points), Duquesne (16) and Saint Louis (11) occupy fifth through seventh. GW, Saint Joseph's and Davidson completed the team scoring.
There were two Atlantic 10 meet records broken Saturday, both in the women's championship. George Mason's Annabelle Eastman recorded a 9:53.07 winning time in the 3000-meter steeplechase, beating Nicole Traynor's (Richmond) nine-year old record by more than 10 seconds. Dayton's Casey Bogues also set a record, throwing the javelin 51.28 meters, topping Lindsey Smith's (Richmond) mark of 46.73 meters that was set in 2005.
In addition to Eastman and Bogues, La Salle's Eleanor Mancini won the women's 10,000-meters with a time of 34:59.81 Hannah Robertson of Mason had a pole vault of 3.96 meters. Kayla Woods won the long jump for Richmond with a 6.21 meter leap, and Mason's Jessica McRae took gold in the hammer throw with a 57.41 meter toss.
Event winners on the men's side included Mason's Jack Ikenberry in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:31.07. Duquesne's Casey Conboy ran 9:09.85 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to win gold, while George Mason's Harrison Shotwell posted a 4.86 meter performance in the pole vault to win first. UMass' Andrew Chabon had a long jump of 7.34 meter that was good for gold and Wil Schwartz of VCU threw the hammer 57.75 meters for first. Rhode Island's Lucas Frost won the javelin with a 62.63 meter throw.
Sunday's final day of competition begins with the men's decathalon at 9:00 am.
