Dayton Volleyball Wins 14th Atlantic 10 Championship Crown

DAYTON, Ohio. — Dayton volleyball won its third straight Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and 14th league title overall with a 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-19) victory over second-seeded VCU Sautday afternoon at the Frericks Center.

The top-seeded Flyers (13-1) claim the A-10's automatic NCAA Tournament bid. It's the third win for Dayton in four straight championship final meetings with VCU.

The championship Most Outstanding Player Jamie Peterson wasted no time, giving Dayton a 2-0 lead with two quick first-set kills. The redshirt junior recorded six of her match-high 14 kills in the first set, bookending the set with UD's final two points on kills as well. The Flyers used two five-point runs through the set to establish a 10-point lead and eventually take a 1-0 lead.

VCU opened set two on fire, rattling off eight straight points, resulting in a 10-1 run that was spurred by two kills each from Sabria Cooper and Jasmine Knight and blocks by Knight, Cooper and Qairo Bentley. Knight, who was selected to the All-Championship Team, had team highs in kills (9) and blocks (5).  
 
Trailing 12-5 in set two, Dayton responded with a trio of blocks from Amelia Moore, Mahalie Swink, Lexie Almodovar, Alayna Yates and Peterson to score eight of the next nine points. Moore had a match-high eight blocks and closed out the thrilling set with two kills, breaking a 24-all tie, cementing a spot on the All-Championship Team.
 
VCU took an early lead in set three as well, reaching a 5-2 advantage on a block by Knight and Cooper. Dayton took a slight advantage in the back-and-forth affair on a kill from Almodovar and a block from Almodovar and Moore. Despite trading points, the Rams were unable to overcome the slight deficit, and Almodovar dropped a kill and Moore and Swink secured the title with a block.
 
Corina Jones tallied 13 digs for VCU while Paula Neciporuka recorded 10 for the Rams. Maura Collins had a match-high 19 digs and Almovodar had 10 digs.
 
Dayton's Bridget Doherty recorded 32 assists in the match, brining her two-match total to 63, earning a spot on the All-Championship Team. In addition to Peterson, Moore and Knight, she was also joined by Almodovar, Fordham's Megan Brzozowski and Rhode Island's Gabrielle Shilling.
