Dayton, Davidson and VCU Take Home First Weekly Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton junior Erica Wojcikiewicz and sophomore Connor Bruce its Women's and Men's Tennis Performers of the Week, respectively. VCU's Alessia Ciuca and Davidson's Alejandro Solares picked up Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for all matches played through February 14.

Wojcikiewicz now sits at 3-2 on the season in singles play, winning two of her last three appearances in the No. 2 spot. On two separate occasions, the Pittsburgh native was the only one to win for the Flyers in singles play, and helped UD picked up a team win against IUPUI, winning in doubles and singles.

Bruce won both matches in No. 1 singles this past weekend. Against Youngstown State, the Pittsburgh product won in three sets and was the fourth point for the Flyers, winning the match for the team. He was also the deciding match against Marquette in No. 1 singles, winning in dramatic fashion to take the match for the Flyers, who won a pair of matches last week. Earlier in the season, Bruce and Matt DeMarco took down Louisville's No. 3 pair in doubles play. 

Ciuca earned wins at No. 3 doubles and singles last week, lifting VCU to a victory against ETSU. Earlier in the season, the Timisoara, Romania product partnered with Gabriela Davidescu for a doubles victory in the top spot in a 5-2 victory against Elon.

Solares has picked up two wins in his young Davidson career. The rookie from Guatemala City, Guatemala, won twice from court six, with 6-4, 6-2 wins against Campbell and a three-set win against Elon (4-6, 7-6, 10-5). From the doubles court, Solares and his partner Maxwell Kachkarov have become Davidson's #1 doubles unit, and have wins over Campbell and Elon. Solares and Kachkarov were up 5-2 against Virginia Tech's #1 doubles team this past weekend, before the Hokies clinched the doubles point from its second and third courts.
