Late Heroics Give Dukes Upset Win Over Hawks in Men's Soccer Quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA – What began as a defensive battle turned into a three-goal fracas in the final 11 minutes as sixth-seeded Duquesne pulled the road upset with a 2-1 win over No. 3 Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Jaime Borjas scored the game-winning goal with 2:11 left, giving the Dukes a 2-1 lead they maintained until the end of the game. Borjas marker was set up by Ryan Goodhew.

Duquesne (9-6-2) will face No. 2 Rhode Island next Friday at 5:00 pm ET/4:00 pm CT in the A-10 semifinals at Saint Louis' Hermann Stadium.

Neither team was able to gain a foothold through the first 79 minutes, with a scoreless halftime extending deep into the second half.

But a score by Saint Joseph's (8-9-1) Matias Mancini at 79:42 broke the goalless drought, putting the Hawks up 1-0 on the unassisted score.

Given the defensive nature of most of the game, it seemed like SJU's 1-0 lead would be enough, but Tom Tzabari got the equalizer in the 85th minute on a pass from Maxi Hopfer, knotting the game at one with 5:06 to play, setting up Borjas' heroics.

Saint Joseph's held a definitive lead in shots (19-8), shots on goal (6-5) and corner kicks (14-2).
