KINGSTON, R.I. – Second-seeded Rhode Island (10-4-2, 5-2-1 A-10) employed a trio of goals from the Rams' top two scorers – Patrick Agyemang and Isak Oystese – en route to the program's sixth trip to the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship semifinals of the past seven years, knocking off No. 7 Davidson (9-7-2, 3-3-2 A-10) in the league's quarterfinals round by a 3-1 margin Saturday evening at the URI Soccer Complex.
With the victory, Rhody clinches a berth in the A-10 Men's Soccer Championship semifinals, squaring off against the winner between third-seeded Saint Joseph's and No. 6 Duquesne at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 12. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
Agyemang, Rhode Island's star forward and native of East Hartford, Conn., ignited the offensive engine for the Rams early on, redirecting a header attempt with his chest in for the match's opening score at the 31st minute. Near the conclusion of the first period, a line drive from Oystese from outside the box slipped past the lunging Wildcats keeper, granting the Nordic import his sixth goal of the season and what-would-eventually-beceome a fifth overall game-winner.
Davidson's Luke Bryant netted his first goal of the year just under two minutes into the second half – a lethal curved shot which finished just inside the right post – to close the Rhody advantage down to just one. Agyemang, however, followed up at the 68th minute with his 10th goal of the 2021 campaign, collecting a rebound off the right post from an Edvin Akselsen banger before knocking the ball home.
For the night, Rhode Island consistently outpaced the Wildcats on the stat sheet, posting advantages in total shots (15-to-10), shots-on-goal (10-to-4) and corner kicks (9-to-8). Unsurprisingly, both Agyemang and Oystese proved the vital attackers for the Rams, as the former racked up three shots with two coming on goal (both scores) while the latter notched four shots, all on target.
Between the pipes, Davidson's Giacomo Piccardo closed out the evening with a match-best seven saves while Stefan Schmidt of URI picked up three of his own.
