DAYTON, Ohio – Saint Louis (11-8-1, 7-3-0 A-10) knocked in two scores and took advantage of a pair of own goals from championship host and second-seeded Dayton (12-6-2, 8-2-0 A-10) as the No. 3 Billikens forged ahead to their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship finale, ousting the Flyers by a 4-2 margin in the league's second semifinal match Friday evening at Baujan Field.
With the win, SLU returns to the A-10 Women's Soccer Championship final as the program seeks its fourth straight conference title, a potential first within the Atlantic 10 (current best is three: UMass 1993-95, Dayton 2009-11 and Saint Louis 2018-20). The Billikens will face No. 4 Massachusetts, who defeated eighth-seeded Saint Joseph's 2-0 earlier on Friday, at noon ET on Sunday, Nov. 7. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
The scoring started within the opening 30 seconds of the match, as a poor touch by a UD defender deep within their own territory resulted in a ball just outside her keeper's grasp, vaulting Saint Louis to a quick 1-0 advantage. Dayton responded just over five minutes later, however, as junior Laney Huber tapped in an equalizer via a well-placed cross from Noel Blain.
The Billikens initially recaptured their edge at the 28th minute behind a short goal from sophomore Caroline Kelly, slipping a shot past the UD keeper following an elite lead pass – approximately 70 yards downfield – off the foot of Abbie Miller. As if on cue, the Flyers fought back just before the midway break, evening the contest at the 37th minute via a single-touch score off senior Alexa Holl after a horizontal cross darted in from Jessica Sheldon.
Saint Louis returned to the pitch following halftime with some vigor, promptly earning the team's third advantage of the match – good for the eventual game-winner – at the 50th minute; freshman Mattyn Summers hip checked a short cross from Brionna Halverson into the upper right corner, netting just her second goal of the 2021 campaign and first game-winner.
The final score of the contest came just minutes later on a second own goal from the Flyers, albeit a forced one on part of SLU. During a corner kick from the Billikens, a UD defender attempting to clear instead deflected the ball back into the net, cementing Saint Louis' lead and the eventual final score.
Notably, the six-goal match serves as the first at the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship since the 2018 final where, coincidentally, Saint Louis topped VCU bya 5-1 margin at Baujan Field.
