PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sixth-seeded Fordham preserved the squad's unprecedented Atlantic 10 Women's Volleyball Championship run behind a second consecutive upset victory, punching a ticket to the program's first-ever A-10 title match via a 3-1 win over No. 2 VCU Friday evening at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
With the win, Fordham (10-19) advances to A-10 Women's Volleyball Championship Final, squaring off against top-seeded Dayton at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 21. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+. It marks the first time in league history the sixth-seeded team has reached the finals.
Fordham was led by Bella Urena and Izzy Fichtel, who each registered 13 kills, and Aria De La Rosa recorded 12 kills. De La Rosa (.276) and Fichtel (.206) led Fordham in hitting. Mallory Lipski had 28 digs to pace the defense for Rams from Rose Hill.
Kialah Jefferson tallied 14 kills to lead VCU, and Jovana Vukcevic had 12 kills. Kylie Loftis had a match-high 10 kills, and Alyna Draper had 20 digs.
A tight battle in every set, Fordham had back to back points at 23-all, closing with a kill by Fichtel to win the opening frame 25-23. VCU held a sight edge throughout set two, evening the match on a kill by Loftis and an attack error for a 25-20 victory.
Fordham held the slight edge in set three, tallying three of the final four points, courtesy of blocks by Urena and Fichtel and a Fichtel kill to win 25-21. Trailing by one late in the fourth set, Fordham scored three straight on two Urena kills plus an ace by Ryan Naumann, winning 25-23.
