PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Headlined by a trio of double-double performances, sixth-seeded Fordham proved its grit throughout the conclusion of the Atlantic 10 Women's Volleyball Championship quarterfinals against No. 3 Saint Louis, battling the Billikens across a back-and-forth contest before stunning SLU in the decisive fifth set, 15-10, Friday evening at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
With the win, Fordham (9-19) advances to the A-10 Women's Volleyball Championship semifinals round, matching wits against second-seeded VCU at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 20. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
The Billikens (18-12) rocketed out to a quick start in the opening set, grabbing a five-point advantage early on and never allowing Fordham any room for a comeback. An efficient offense – hit .206 for the frame – grew the lead as large as 12 before SLU clinched the 1-0 edge behind a 25-14 margin.
The second set, however, saw a complete shift for the Rams, as Fordham went from swinging at a .000 in the opening frame to a blazing .286 in the second, registering 14 kills en route to evening up the contest, 25-22. The third played out similarly, as a competitive Saint Louis squad managed to hold the Rams at bay until the final stretch, watching as Fordham ratcheted off six consecutive points to secure an identical 25-22 victory and the 2-1 advantage.
The fourth frame took a turn back towards the Billikens, as the do-or-die mentality kicked in for third-seeded Saint Louis. Notably, SLU hitters blasted a lethal .310 overall throughout the set, driving home 17 kills with just four total errors to force a decisive fifth.
The Fordham offense resurfaced in the deciding frame, grabbing a lead the team would not surrender via an early 5-1 surge before sealing the victory late behind six of the final eight points. The Rams mounted a surgical offensive performance across the fifth set, hitting a game-best .314 with 12 kills and just one error.
Fordham sophomore Whitley Moody put together a memorable outing as she led the Rams to the upset win, notching a match-high 16 kills along with 16 digs for a double-double. Fellow teammates Bella Urena (15 kills, 15 digs) and Megan Brzozowski (49 assists, 14 digs) served as key contributors as well, clinching a double-double apiece for the contest.
On the Billikens side, both Maya Taylor and Abby Lynn posted double-doubles of their own as the former racked up 15 kills and 21 digs while the latter tacked on 47 assists with 16 digs herself. Jillian Mattingly added 13 kills while both Delaney Rice and Emily Hanken secured 11.
