DAYTON, Ohio – Second-seeded Dayton will host the semifinals and final of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship after a 3-1 win over No. 7 Richmond in the quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Bajaun Field.
The final two rounds are hosted by the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals. Top-seeded VCU was upset Saturday night, providing an opportunity for the Flyers to host if they beat the Spiders.
The Flyers will face No. 3 Saint Louis at 4 p.m. ET Friday in the semifinals. The winner will face the No. 4 Massachusetts/No. 8 Saint Joseph's winner in the championship final Sunday at noon ET.
Dayton (12-5-2) dominated offensively, with 11 shots in each half, converting three of those into goals, including the opening score in the sixth minute by Marlee Taylor off of a setup pass by Jessica Sheldon.
But the upset-minded Spiders (7-10-1) responded 19 minutes later with Emma Coleman's equalizer. The goal, which was assisted by TJ Anderson, came after an offensive flurry by Richmond, which had a pair of shots a minute earlier.
Tied at the half at one goal apiece, UD had an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Laney Huber scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 61:21 on an unassisted tally, and Itala Gemelli added the insurance marker at 86:53, beating Richmond keeper Taylor Montague one-on-one.
In total Montague made eight saves on the 22 UD shots and Dayton's two keepers, Madelyn Dewey and Maddie Crosby each made a save against Richmond's nine shots. Dayton led in corner kicks 7-3 and held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal.
