Rhode Island Wins Fifth A-10 Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship In Seven Years

KINGSTON, R.I.- Rhode Island claimed its fifth Atlantic 10 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship since 2014, winning the 2020 meet Sunday with 180 points. The Rams, who were in first place after the first day, winning three relays and one individual event at Mackal Field House to secure the title.
 
George Mason, the defending champions, finished in second place with 168 points, while VCU took third place at 102 points. Davidson finished fourth at 63 points, followed by Fordham (61), Massachusetts (58), La Salle (49), Saint Joseph’s (44), Saint Louis (41), and George Washington rounding out the group with 14 points. 
 
Junior Anthony Delasanta led the way for the Rams with a win in the 400 meters in a time of 48.47 and a second place finish in the 200 meters at 21.87. Rhody also dominated in both of Sunday’s relays, taking first in the 4x800 meter relay in 7:44.46 and the 4x400 meter relay in 3:17.62. The Rams had a plethora of top-three finishes throughout the day including Roniel Mata’s 1:05.03 to claim third in the 500 meters, LaRue Martin’s third place finish in the 60 meters at 6.92, Nathan Coogan’s 2:29.61 to grab second place in the 1,000 meters, and Kellen Waters took second in the mile with a time of 4:13.52. Rhode Island’s John Copeland won the 2020 A-10 Coach of the Year after his team’s spectacular performance. 
 
George Mason’s Jaylen Simmons, the 2020 A-10 Most Outstanding Field Performer, took first in the shot put with a new meet and facility record with a measure of 19.33 meters, while Carson Gardner took first in the Heptathlon with 4,974 points. Isaiah Carter, won Most Outstanding Rookie after winning the 200 meters with a time of 21.74. Mason’s Jacob Weigel won the 500 meters with a time of 1:04.98, while juniors Jordan Turner and Davian Powell had a one-two finish in the 60 meters at 6.80 and 6.87, respectively.
 
La Salle senior Darian Alston finished first in the triple jump at 15.10 meters, while Saint Louis junior Alex Oleson took the top spot in the high jump at 2.08 meters. 
 
VCU senior Ian Davis had a strong showing in the 60 meter hurdles, winning at 8.11
 
Saint Joseph’s Zach Michon was named Most Outstanding Track Performer after he won the mile with a time of 4:12.96 and 3,000 meters in 8:26.12, while La Salle’s Nathan Gillis took first in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:29.31. Davidson’s Daniel Alvarez-Orlachia claimed first place in the 800 meters in 1:55.91.
