NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- George Washington’s Haoning Chen and Andrea Ho have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the week, respectively. George Washington’s Tyler Kawakami and Davidson’s Shelby Stanley earned Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday. The awards are for events completed Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
Chen, a graduate student from Guangzhou, China, put together a fantastic effort against West Virginia, highlighted by a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.61. He was also third in the 100 breast at 56.32 and part of two strong relay swims versus the Mountaineers, placing first in 400 free relay in 3:04.02 and second in the 200 medley in 1:30.78.
Ho was part of three wins Saturday against West Virginia. The junior from Perth, Australia took first in the 100 back in 56.45 seconds before claiming the 200 back in 2:03.35. She also was part of a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.44. She was fourth in the 100 fly in 57.98 seconds, as well.
Kawakami scored in three individual events at West Virginia. The first-year from Honolulu, Hawaii, was runner-up in the 50 free at 21.03, and he also placed third in the 100 free with a time of 45.77 and fourth in the 100 fly tapping the wall at 51.92.
Against Gardner-Webb Friday, Stanley, from Roanoke, Va., won the butterfly events, winning the 100 fly in 56.51 and the 200 fly in 2:03.77. Her 200 fly was the fastest in the conference over the weekend, and her 100 fly time was second overall and first among league freshmen. Additionally, her 100 free time of 53.02 was top among A-10 freshmen and fourth overall.
