McGuigan's Gem Pitches Spiders Past Rival VCU in A-10 Championship Second Round

BRONX, N.Y. – Brendan McGuigan pitched a gem, including carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning to lead No. 5 Richmond past top-seeded VCU, 6-2, Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Fordham’s Houlihan Park. The Spiders (28-24-1) advance to play No. 2 Davidson Friday at 3:30 pm in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. VCU (39-19) is eliminated from the championship.

McGuigan (3-4) went seven complete innings, allowing two runs on one hit with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Richmond scored twice in the third on an RBI single by Tyler Plantier and a D.J. Lee scored on a throwing error after a Jordan Schulefand single. Then in the sixth, Anthony Forte had a sac fly that scored Sage Bruhl and Johnny Hipsman cranked a three-run home run to right center, putting Richmond up 6-0.

McGuigan carried the no-hitter through six complete innings and got one out in the seventh before Logan Amiss tripled with Paul Witt on first form a walk, breaking up the no hitter and the shutout. Brandon Henson then had a sac fly that scored Amiss, but that was the extent of the VCU scoring.

Justin Sorokowski (4-2) took the loss, allowing four hits with five strikeouts. He gave up two runs, but only one of the was earned in four innings of work.

Amiss’ hit was the only hit for VCU, while Richmond scattered its seven hits among seven different players. Hipsman had a game-high three RBI.
