BRONX, N.Y. – No. 2 Davidson survived elimination with a 4-2 win over No. 6 Rhode Island Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.
The Wildcats (28-21) advance in the consolation bracket and will play the winner between No. 1 VCU and No. 5 Richmond Friday at 3:30 pm. Rhode Island (24-29) is eliminated from the championship.
Davidson scored three in the top of the second for an early lead, starting with a Brett Centracchio single to right that drove Ruben Fontes. Trevor Candelaria followed with a two-RBI single to center that plated Centracchio and Max Bazin. Bazin then added to the lead in the fourth with a solo home run to right.
Rhody got one run back in the bottom of the third on a Greg Cavaliere ground out that brought Brett McManus home. While holding the ‘Cats scoreless over the next six innings, the Rams added another run in the seventh when Josh Brodeur scored on an error in centerfield.
Bazin was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead Davidson at the plate, while Brett McManus was 2-for-4 with a run to pace the Rams.
Davidson starter Josh Hudson (5-2) earned the win for 6.2 innings of work, allowing four hits, four walks, two runs with six strikeouts. Gabe Levy recorded his 10 save of the year with 1.2 hitless innings pitched with three strikeouts. Jake Walker (2-1) took the loss in 2.0 innings of work with three hits and three runs allowed.
