BRONX, N.Y. – No. 6 Rhode Island won a stellar pitchers’ duel over seventh-seeded Saint Louis that saw 33 combined strikeouts between starters Connor Lehmann and Tyler Wilson in the first elimination game of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship. The Rams edged the Billikens 2-1 Wednesday night at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.
Rhody (24-27) advances to face the loser from Thursday’s Dayton/Davidson matchup. SLU falls to 25-30 and is eliminated from the championship.
After Saint Louis plated a run in the top of the 10th inning, URI’s Sonny Ulliana singled into right to drive in Greg Cavaliere and Josh Brodeur for the winning runs in the bottom half of the extra frame.
Lehmann (5-6) went 9.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs with three walks and the record-breaking 19 strikeouts. Wilson allowed six hits in 10 innings, with one unearned run and one walk with his record-tying 14 strikeouts.
