KINGSTON, R.I.—Second-seeded Dayton won its second straight Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Sunday with a 3-1 win over top-seeded VCU. The Flyers receive the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
It was UD's 13th Atlantic 10 title overall, and it marked the third straight year Dayton and VCU have met in the finals. The Flyers will learn their NCAA Tournament placement on the selection show at 8:30 pm on Dec. 1 on ESPNU.
The Flyers (22-8) had four players tally double-digit kills. All-Championship Team selection Sierra Pla led the Flyers with 15 kills on .429 hitting with four blocks. Jamie Peterson had 13 kills and 12 digs, Amelia Moore recorded 11 kills and Alli Papesh tallied 10 kills. Olivia Dubay added seven blocks. Peterson, who totaled 35 kills and 27 digs in two matches, was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
VCU (24-6) won the first set, scoring seven of the final 10 points, including three straight with the score tied at 22 on kills from Jasmine Sneed, Gina Tuzzolo and Paula Neciporuka to win 25-22.
Dayton returned the favor in the second and third set, tallying five of the last seven points in set two to win 25-23 on a kill by Pla. The Flyers tallied four of the final five points thanks to a pair of Peterson kills to claim the third set 25-20.
UD took a lead midway through the deciding fourth set, scoring six of eight points for a 16-11 lead, and held that advantage through the remainder of the match, winning the championship with a 25-19 set score on a final kill by Josie Vondran.
Neciporuka led VCU with 13 kills, while Vicky Giommarini had 11 kills and Jaelyn Jackson finished with 10 kills on .500 hitting. Sneed recorded eight blocks on Sunday and earned a spot on the All-Championship team.
Joining Peterson, Pla and Sneed on the All-Championship team were Maura Collins from Dayton, Giommarini from VCU and Maya Taylor and Sien Gallop of Saint Louis.
