KINGSTON, R.I. – Top seeded VCU will play in its third straight Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship final, advancing to the title game with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) win over No. 5 La Salle Saturday at Keaney Gymnasium.
The Rams (24-5) will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Dayton and No. 3 Saint Louis. First serve for Sunday’s Championship Final is set for 2:00 pm ET.
VCU had a slight edge at 11-9 in game one after a back and forth beginning, but the Rams rallied off seven of the next nine points, including an ace by Madalon Simpson, a kill by Jasmine Sneed and a pair of kills from Paula Neciporuka to push the advantage to eight points at 19-11. La Salle chipped away and got as close as five at 23-18 on a kill from Elizabeth Osborn, but VCU scored the next two points to take a 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 set one win.
Set two played out in similar fashion, with VCU breaking a 12-all tie with a 6-0 run, anchored by a pair of blocks from Sneed and Kat Young. The teams traded points from there, and VCU came away with a 25-17 win for a 2-0 lead.
The third set went down to the wire, and was tied at 21 when kills from Gina Tuzzolo and a block form Jaelyn Jackson and Maria Giommarini set up a match-ending kill by Giommarini, giving VCU a 25-22 win.
Giommarini led the Rams with 12 kills, hitting .632 for the match. Sneed contributed 10 kills, hitting .643 and eight blocks. VCU hit .383 as a team for the match. Samantha Graver had 12 kills to lead La Salle (14-13).
