Fordham's Wilson, Richmond's Purcell Take Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Fordham’s Patrick Wilson and Richmond’s Maggie Purcell were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. George Washington’s Tyler Kawakami and Rhode Island’s Aimee Garcia were selected as Men’s and Women’s Rookies of the Week. The awards are for events completed Nov. 4-10. 

Wilson won the 200-breaststroke event at Georgetown in a season-best time of 2:07.02, while grabbing second in the 100-breaststroke in a season-best time of 57.63 seconds. The junior from Levittown, N.Y., was also second as a member of the 200-medley relay that finished at 1:35.57 and the 400 freestyle relay clocking in at 3:12.80.

Purcell, a sophomore from Southampton N.Y., won three individual events against Virginia Tech and the reigning Division II National Champions, Queens. She earned wins in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:04.24, 200-breaststroke at 2:19.67 and the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 2:05.78.

Kawakami, a freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii, posted a pair of individual wins and a relay victory to help George Washington best Howard, 143-61, on Saturday. He took the 100-freestyle with a time of 47.65, 100-breast at 59.71 and also finished third individually in the 50 free at 21.93. He was part of the Colonials’ win in the 200-medley relay, as well.

Garcia won two individual events and was part of the winning 800-yard relay team to lead Rhode Island to a 141-140 win over Massachusetts. The freshman from Boulder City, Nevada, won the 500-freestyle finishing at 5:08.80 and 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:26.72. She also placed second in the 100-yard individual medley at 1:01.38, contributing 33 points in Rhody's first win over UMass since 1980, snapping a streak of 18 straight losses to the conference foe. Garcia also swam the opening leg of the first-place 800-yard relay, which was the final event of the meet.
