MERION STATION, Pa.—Litiana Field helped VCU field hockey make history Friday, scoring a double-overtime game-winning goal to send the second-seeded Rams to the A-10 Field Hockey Championship title game for the first time program history. VCU topped third seeded Massachusetts 3-2 at Ellen Ryan Field.
VCU (12-6) will face top-seeded Saint Joseph’s at 2:00 pm Saturday. The Hawks beat Richmond 3-1 earlier in the day. It will be the first time since 2011 UMass (10-10) will not be playing for a title. The Minutemen won four A-10 Championships in that six year span.
Field’s game winner came following a corner just 1:57 into the second overtime, taking a pass from Maite Sturm. The win also put VCU coach Stacey Bean into the A-10 title game for the first time in her career. Bean’s 16-year head coaching career also included time at A-10 affiliate member Saint Francis and league member Rhode Island.
A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Emily McNamara gave VCU a 2-0 lead, scoring first on a pass from Shannon Pereira at 8:43, then on a corner with an assist from Field at 27:55.
UMass got a pair of second half goals to tie the game and eventually force the overtime period. Lucy Cooper and Antonet Louw took advantage of a turnover just outside the circle, with Cooper burying the pass from Louw at 39:23 Courtney Ocasal then scored her first goal of the season to tie the game off of a rebound at 51:51.
VCU led in shots 21-10 and penalty corners 9-2. UMass had a 10-6 advantage in saves, including spectacular stops by Johanna von dem Borne in the first overtime.
