Home Runs, Vanderslice Win Game for Hawks

BRONX, N.Y.—No. 3 Saint Joseph’s had 16 hits, including three home runs, and had got a strong pitching performance from Pat Vanderslice to beat No. 2 VCU and reach the consolation bracket final of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.

The Hawks (31-22) are playing Davidson in the late game Friday, with the winner advancing to the championship final Saturday. Top-seeded Rhode Island awaits the winner of the late game. VCU is eliminated from the tournament at 38-19.

Deon Stafford, Jr., Matt Maul and Cal Jadacki all hit the ball out of the park for the Hawks, who scored five runs in the first and then added one in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Vanderslice (7-3) went seven innings, allowing just one run with eight strikeouts and five hits. Luke Crabb (3-1) took the loss, allowing six runs, but only one earned with four strikeouts.

Logan Farrar hit a solo home run in the first for VCU’s only run of the game.
