BRONX, N.Y.—A seven-run third inning turned into a berth to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship final for Rhode Island, which beat Davidson13-4 in the semifinals Friday at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.
The top-seeded Rams (29-25) advance to their second straight A-10 title game. Davidson (27-25) will play again tonight in the consolation bracket game at 7:00 pm.
Rhode Island took a one-run lead on a Martin Figueroa solo shot in the first. The Rams took that lead into third inning, and a Ryan Olmo single to center drove in two runners, Chris Hess and Laurence Hill. Two batters later, Connor Foreman hit a three-run homer over the right field fence, clearing Olmo and Martin Figueroa off the bases. Chase Livingston then singled and set the table for Mike Corin, who went deep to left center for the Rams’ second round-tripper of the inning, chasing Davidson starter Clark Beeker (9-4), who took the loss.
Davidson threated in the bottom of the third with runners on second and third, but Olmo made a spectacular inning-ending catch to rob Sam Foy of an RBI-double.
Rhody added another run in the fourth, and had a 9-0 lead when a single bat swing put the Wildcats back in the game. A double, a walk and a single led to bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fifth for Davidson. Brian Fortier took advantage, crushing a first-pitch grand slam to left center to clear the bases. Jake Sidwell, Max Bazin and Will Robertson all scored on the homer.
The Rams added one run in the seventh and another in the eighth and finished the scoring barrage with a two-run homer in the ninth by Hill that scored Livingston.
Six players had two hits for Rhody, while Olmo, Foreman and Corin all had three RBI. Figueroa scored three runs for URI. Alec Acosta was 2-for-4 to lead Davidson while Fortier’s four RBI were a game high.
Steve Moyers (6-6) earned the win, throwing seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
