Offensive Explosion Leads VCU to Eight-Run Win Over GW

BRONX, N.Y.—Second-seeded VCU had 16 hits en route to a 12-4 win over No. 7 George Washington Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship consolation bracket at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.

The Rams (38-18) advance to Friday’s consolation bracket semifinal to face the Thursday night winner of No. 3 Saint Joseph’s versus No. 5 Fordham. The Friday game will air live on ASN.  The Colonials (24-33), who also lost to VCU to open the championship, were eliminated with the loss.

Logan Farrar and Cooper Mickelson both had a 3-for-4 day to lead VCU, which had six players with multiple hits. Matt Davis, who hit the game’s only home run, had four RBI and two runs scored.

George Washington also put on an offensive show with 11 hits, with seven of the nine starters getting at least one hit. The Colonials were unable to push runs across, however, stranding nine runners in six of the nine innings. Mark Osis and Bobby Campbell were both 2-for-5 to lead GW.

Brooks Vial (8-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings with eight hits and four runs (three earned) for his eighth win of the season. Sam Donko picked up his 20th save of the year allowing three hits and no runs in 3 2/3 innings. The two VCU pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
