Colonials? Offense Sparks Win Over Saint Louis

BRONX, N.Y.—Seventh-seeded George Washington scored a 6-1 win over No. 4 Saint Louis in the first consolation bracket game of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship Wednesday night at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.

The Colonials scored a single run in the second, and two in the fourth before a fifth-inning three-run bomb by Kevin Mahala added three insurance runs. Along with Mahala, Robbie Metz had the hot stick with a 4-for-5 performance to lead George Washington.

GW (24-32) will now play the loser between No. 2 VCU and No. 6 Davidson Thursday at 5:00 pm.  The Billikens (25-31), who lost twice Wednesday, were eliminated from the tournament.

Matt Cosentino singled  in the second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and then broke for home on a throwing error, to score GW’s first run. Brandon Chapman’s RBI double scored Matthieu Robert and Joey Bartosic’s RBI single plated Chapman for the Colonials’ two fourth-inning runs.

Josh Bunselmeyer, who, along with Braxton Martinez, led SLU with two hits, singled up the middle in the sixth inning to drive in Parker Sniatynski for the Billikens’ only run.

Jacob Williams (5-5) got the win for the Colonials, allowing one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work with six strikeouts. Eddie Muhl allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings to claim his 11th save of the season. Saint Louis starter Devin Mahoney (4-3) took the loss, with six hits and three runs (two earned).
