BRONX, N.Y.—VCU got three hits from three different players and a strong pitching performance from A-10 Rookie of the Year Michael Dailey to beat George Washington 5-1 in the second game of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship Wednesday at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.
Jimmy Kerrigan, Logan Farrar and Cooper Mickelson each had three hits for the Rams (37-17), who will face Davidson Thursday at 1:30 pm. George Washington (23-32) will play again Wednesday night in an elimination game against the loser between No. 4 Saint Louis and No. 5 Fordham. VCU totaled 15 hits in the game.
Dailey (6-0) went seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with one strikeout. All-Conference First Team reliever Sam Donko picked up his 19th save on the season. Bobby LeWarne took the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
The Rams did most of their damage in the fifth inning, starting with a lead-off double by Farrar. After a walk and a wild pitch put the center fielder on third, a balk by LeWarne scored Farrar. Darian Carpenter then scored on a wild pitch after reaching third on the balk. An RBI single to third by Walker Haymaker scored Kerrigan.
VCU bookened the three-run inning with single scores by Kerrigan in the fourth and seventh. The first run of the game by Kerrigan was on a Cody Acker single to center. Kerrigan had reached on a double down the leftfield line, part of his 3-for-4 day. His seventh inning score started with a leadoff single, his third hit of the game and ended on a sacrifice fly by Haymaker.
GW plated its only run in the sixth on an RBI double to center by Mark Osis that scored Robbie Metz. Osis was 3-for-4 to lead the Colonials offensively.
