Big Eighth Inning Lifts Fordham to Victory over Saint Louis

BRONX, N.Y.—Fifth-seeded Fordham scored six runs in the eighth inning, including three on a bases-loaded triple by Jason Lundy to beat No. 4 Saint Louis 9-7 in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Fordham’s Houlihan Park.

Fordham (26-29) advances to face top-seeded Rhode Island at 1:30 pm Thursday. Saint Louis (28-28) falls into the consolation bracket and will play No. 7 George Washington in an elimination game Wednesday night. First pitch for that game was scheduled for 8:45 pm.

Fordham’s big inning started when Joey Runco drew a one-out walk, then reached third on a wild pitch and fly out. Luke Stampfl singled to drive in Runco and then Mark Donadio scored on a Justin Bardwell single. Lundy’s triple bagger to straightaway center cleared the loaded bases, plating Stampfl, Bardwell and pinch hitter Ian Edmiston. Lundy came home on a Joseph DeVito hit for the Rams’ sixth run of the eighth.

The Rams also had to turn back a fierce Billiken rally in the ninth inning. Down 9-5, Saint Louis got a leadoff single by Devin Mahoney and Alex King walked. An RBI single by Michael Bozarth plated both runners and brought the tying run to the plate. But DeVito and Matthew Kozuch turned a game-ending double play, on a hit to shortstop by Parker Sniatynski, to squash the rally.

Runco, McNally and Stampfl each had two hits for the Rams and Stampfl had two RBI. Bozarth and Josh Bunselmeyer each had two hits for SLU while Bozarth and Martinez each claimed a pair of RBI.

Fordham scored the first two runs of the game, including a Ryan McNally homer down the left field line in the fourth inning. But the Rams needed the eighth-inning rally after SLU recorded a four-run sixth to take the lead. Sniatynski singled to shortstop to score James Morisano. Sniatynski then scored along with Bozarth on a Braxton Martinez hit to center. Martinez also scored when Trent Leimkuehler also hit the ball to centerfield.

Rams’ reliever Jimmy Murphy (3-2) came on in the Saint Louis sixth, and allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings of work, closing out the game for the win. Fordham starter Joseph Serrapica went 5 1/3 innings with two runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Nick Vichio (1-4) took the loss, as the lone baserunner he allowed was Bardwell, who’s score put Fordham up for good.
