Rhode Island Walks Off With 2-1 Victory Over Richmond

WASHINGTON – Jordan Powell singled home Nick DeRegis in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel second-seeded Rhode Island to a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Richmond in Game Five of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.

Rhode Island (25-23-1) advances to Friday’s 5:00 p.m. game where it will face the winner of Saint Louis and VCU. Richmond (28-24) will take on George Washington in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between the Rams’ Steve Moyers and Richmond’s Dylan Stoops. Both southpaws surrendered just one run over the first eight innings of play.

Rhode Island threated go on top in the bottom half of the eighth when it put runners on second and third with two outs. Chris Hess then drove a ball to deep to centerfield that was hauled in by Tanner Stanley who leaped for the catch and managed to hold on to the ball after colliding with the wall.

Richmond’s best shot to break the tie came in the top of the ninth when Jansen Fraser singled to right field with two outs but Doug Kraeger was cut down at the plate to keep the game locked up at 1-1.

In the Ram ninth, DeRegis got hit by a pitch with one out. Mike Corin and Matt O’Neil followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases setting the stage for Powell’s clutch hit.

Moyers went 8.1 innings, giving up five hits and one run. Brad Applin got the win in relief after getting the final two outs of the ninth for URI. Stoops went 7.1 innings and surrendered just five hits as well. Ray Harron took the loss after tossing one inning of relief.
