Rhode Island Tops Fordham 7-3 in A-10 Baseball Championship

WASHINGTON –  After falling behind early, second-seeded Rhode Island scored seven unanswered runs to earn a 7-3 victory over seventh-seeded Fordham in game two of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday.

With the win, Rhode Island (24-23-1) advances to play third-seeded Richmond on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Fordham will be back in action Wednesday night when it takes on sixth-seeded George Washington at 8:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

Fordham (22-31) scored a pair of runs on a fielder’s choice groundout and an RBI single by Joseph DeVito in the first inning to up 2-0.

DeVito delivered and RBI single in the third inning to score Charles Galiano and make it 3-0 in favor of Fordham.

Rhode Island cut the lead to 3-2 in the third inning and went on top for good with a three run fifth inning which was highlighted by RBI hits from Nick DeRegis and Ryan Olmo.

URI tacked on a pair of runs when Derek Gardella singled home two runners and make it 7-3 in favor of Rhode Island after six innings.

Lou Distasio got the win for Rhode Island to improve his record to 6-5 overall. Distasio went seven innings, gave up five hits, three runs and struck out two. Taso Stathopoulos got the save after finishing off the last two innings and surrendering just two hits.

Brett Kennedy (6-8) took the loss for Fordham after going 4.2 innings, surrendering fiver runs and striking out four.
