WASHINGTON – The third-seeded Richmond Spiders used a pair of homeruns to top sixth-seeded George Washington 4-1 in the first game of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship taking place at GW’s Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Richmond advances to Thursday’s 10:00 a.m. game where it will face either Fordham or Rhode Island.
UR starter Ryan Cook and GW’s Bobby LeWarne locked up in a pitcher’s duel for the first five innings with neither hurler giving up a run.
In the Spider half of the sixth inning, Tanner Stanley walked with one out and A-10 Player of the Year Michael Morman followed with his seventh homerun of the season to make it 2-0.
GW cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh when Eli Kashi delivered an RBI single to make the score 2-1.
Richmond’s Jansen Fraser got the run back in the next inning with a two-out, solo homerun to left field to make it 3-1.
In the top of the ninth, GW put a pair of runners on base with two out, but Richmond’s Ray Harron got the final out to preserve the win and pick up his ninth save of the season.
Cook (8-2) got the win after going 6.2 innings, allowing just five hits and one run, while striking out five.
LeWarne (8-6) tossed 7.2 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five.
