RICHMOND, Va. – After a scoreless 110 minutes, George Mason keeper Michael Butts turned away a pair shots during penalty kicks as the No. 4 Patriots advanced 4-2 over the No. 5 Davidson in the Quarterfinals of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
With the win, George Mason (11-3-5) moves on to play top-seeded Rhode Island at 5:00 p.m. in Friday’s first semifinal. Davidson caps its first season as a member of the A-10 with a record of 10-2-5.
After neither team could score in regulation, a flurry of offensive action took place in overtime. With six minutes remaining in the second extra period, Mason was able to attack in the Davidson third of the field, getting a two-on-one opportunity, but Timmi Mulgrew’s shot was turned away by Wildcat keeper Matt Pacifici.
Davidson’s best chance to score came in the final seconds of the second overtime when a crossing pass was played into the box and Alan Reiter was able to volley a shot on goal that was stopped by Butts.
In the penalty kick round, each team scored on their first opportunities. Butts then made his first save on the Wildcats second try, giving Mason the edge.
With the score 3-2, Pacifici made a key stop to keep the Willdcats alive, only to see his save matched by Butts on Davidson’s ensuing kick. Daniel Hoffman converted on Mason’s next chance, sending the Patriots to the semifinals.
