A-10 Women's Tennis Teams Ready For Day Two Of Competition

MATCH #10 - RESULTS
#3 SAINT LOUIS 4, #6 DUQUESNE 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third-seeded Saint Louis earned a spot in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship semifinals with its 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Duquesne, Saturday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

With the win, the Billikens will take on second-seeded Temple at approximately 3:30PM this afternoon, while Duquesne will face #7 Massachusetts in the consolation bracket at approximately 3:30PM as well. In the quarterfinals, Duquesne secured the coveted doubles point and the early 1-0 advantage, as Ana Mungo and Tara Majdalani teamed up to defeat SLU’s Mia Elmore and Stephanie Hollis, 8-0, at the number-three tandem position, and Samantha Noble, along with partner Megan O’Sullivan out-dueled Hailee Elmore and Casey Miller of Saint Louis, 8-5.

Saint Louis, however, rallied in the singles portion of the match, rattling off four-straight wins on the number four, three, two and five courts to put away the Dukes, 4-1.

MATCH #11 - RESULTS
#13 RHODE ISLAND 4, #12 ST. BONAVENTURE 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 13 Rhode Island upset No. 12 St. Bonaventure, 4-1, during its consolation match at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, Saturday morning at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Rams finish in a tie for 11th-place, along with No. 11 Saint Joseph’s, while the Bonnies and No. 14 La Salle tie for 13th-place.

URI used a pair of doubles wins on the number one and two courts to secure the match’s first point and head into the singles portion of the match with the 1-0 lead. St. Bonaventure quickly tied the match with a convincing straight-set victory at number two singles, as Maria Barousse defeated Christen Cadigan, 6-0, 6-1.

The Rams, however, would fend off the Bonnies, converting three consecutive singles matches into points – winning at number five, six and four singles.

MATCH #12 - RESULTS
#11 SAINT JOSEPH'S 4, #14 LA SALLE 0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Eleventh-seeded Saint Joseph’s cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 14 La Salle in the Consolation Bracket of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, Saturday morning at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

With the win, the Hawks tie for 11th-place with the winner of the #12 St. Bonaventure/#13 Rhode Island contest, while La Salle closes out the Championship tied for 13th-place.

SJU claimed the doubles point with convincing 8-1 and 8-0 victories at number two and three doubles, respectively, and then rolled to a trio of wins at numbers two, five and three singles to earn the 4-0 win.

#1 RICHMOND 4, #4 GEORGE WASHINGTON 0
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Defending champion Richmond downed fourth-seeded George Washington, 4-0, during the semifinals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship, Saturday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

UR, the top-seed in the Championship, claimed the doubles point and the 1-0 advantage with an 8-2 win at number two doubles, along with an 8-6 victory at the third tandem position. The Spiders then captured three straight singles wins courtesy of Helen Cunningham at number one singles; Elizabeth Sims at number six singles; and Alexandra Smyth at number five singles.

With the win, the Spiders advance to the Championship, where they will face the winner of the No. 2 Temple/No. 3 Saint Louis match, while the Colonials will take on the loser of the same contest.

MATCH #14 - RESULTS
#8 CHARLOTTE 4, #5 XAVIER 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Eighth-seeded Charlotte knocked off fifth-seeded Xavier, 4-1, in the consolation bracket of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The 49ers now advance to Match 18, where they will face the winner of the No. 6 Duquesne/No. 7 Massachusetts contest on Sunday morning at 8:00AM to determine fifth-place in the Championship.

Charlotte secured the doubles point with wins at the number one and three tandem positions, before beating out Xavier 3-1 in singles to claim the win. Iveta Guneva, Anna Ekelund and Emmanuelle Briant captured singles victories for the 49ers.

MATCH #15 - RESULTS
#3 SAINT LOUIS 4, #2 TEMPLE 3
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Third-seeded Saint Louis up-ended second-seeded Temple, 4-3, in the semifinals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday night at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. With the victory, the Billikens advance to the finals of the Championship, where they will seek the program's first Championship. SLU will take on top-seeded Richmond at 10:30AM, while the Owls will go head-to-head with No. 4 George Washington at 10:30AM to determine the third-place recipient.

Temple took the early advantage after capturing the crucial doubles point, winning at the number two and three positions. The Owls' tandem of Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont outlasted SLU's Jenny Nalepa and Kasia Tomalak, 8-6, after TU's Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms put away Stephanie Hollis and Mia Elmore, 8-3.

TU extended its advantage with a convincing straight-set win at number one singles courtesy of Elsye Steiner, before Saint Louis rattled off three consecutive victories on number three, four and five singles to take the lead at 3-2.

The Owls sixth-singles player, Jordan Batey, knotted the match at 3-3, defeating Mia Elmore, 6-1, 6-4. The match would then come down to the top singles position, where Hailee Elmore of Saint Louis provided the late-match heroics the Billikens would need, out-muscling Stangl 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, en route to the 4-3 triumph.

#9 DAYTON 4, #10 FORDHAM 2
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Ninth-seeded Dayton defeated No. 10 Fordham, 4-2, during the consolation round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.  With the win, the Flyers take home ninth place in the league's Championship, while the Rams close out the 2011 campaign in 10th place.

Seventh-seeded Massachusetts defeated sixth-seeded Duquesne, 4-1, during the consolation round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday evening at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Minutewomen advance in the event and will go head-to-head with No. 8 Charlotte on Sunday at 8:00AM to determine fifth-place, while the Dukes close out the Championship tied for seventh-place with No. 5 Xavier.
