ST. LOUIS - Top-seeded George Washington rolled to a 4-0 victory over second-seeded Xavier on Sunday afternoon in the finals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Championship at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
George Washington, which seized the program’s second title and first since 1979, upended the three time defending champion Musketeers to earn the league's automatic berth to next month's NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
“This is one of the happiest moments of our lives,” commented George Washington head coach Greg Munoz. “This was the last opportunity for our seniors and we played our best tennis of the year today. The A-10 Championship is what we worked, what we prepared for all year.”
The Colonials took the early 1-0 advantage after securing the crucial doubles point with convincing wins on the number two and three courts, respectively. GW’s tandem of Christopher Kushma and Alexander van Gils defeated XU’s Bobby Deye and Jimmy Roebker, 8-1, before Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen downed Brandon MacDonald and Philip Diaz, 8-2.
George Washington then cruised to a trio of straight-set singles wins, as Erik Hannah, Gils and Kushma were all victorious on their respective courts. Hannah picked-up an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Mesa Mei at number four singles, before Gils downed Brian Starr, 6-1, 6-3, at the number-two spot. Kushma closed out the championship and sealed the win for the Colonials with his 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Brandon MacDonald at the No. 3 position.
Also on Sunday, No. 3 Temple outlasted No. 4 Duquesne, 4-3, in the third-place match, while No. 6 Charlotte and No. 7 Richmond posted wins to finish fifth and seventh, respectively.
