ST. LOUIS – The top four seeds held in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship and will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Top-seeded George Washington secured the first spot in the semifinals, as the Colonials cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 8 Saint Joseph’s on Friday afternoon at Sunset Tennis Club in Sappington, Mo. With the doubles point in hand, GW entered singles play with the 1-0 advantage and picked up convincing straight set wins on the number one, three and five individual courts for the match triumph. The Colonials, in search of their first championship crown since 1979, will face fourth-seeded Duquesne on Saturday at 11:00AM.
Three-time defending champion Xavier earned its spot in the semifinals with a 4-0 victory of seventh-seeded Richmond on Friday evening at Kings Point Tennis Center in Belleville, Ill. The second-seeded Musketeers fought-off a trio of tough Spider tandems, claiming 8-6 wins at number one and two doubles, respectively. XU then captured impressive singles victories on the number one, three and four courts for the right to face No. 3 Temple in the semifinals on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00PM.
Duquesne defeated fifth-seeded St. Bonaventure, 4-1, on Friday evening at Sunset Tennis Club, claiming its place in the semifinals. The Dukes fought back from a 1-0 deficit after the doubles competition and rattled off four consecutive singles victories to claim the win.
In the nightcap, third-seeded Temple defeated No. 6 Charlotte, 4-0, to capture the fourth and final spot in the semifinals.
Due to inclement weather in the St. Louis area, opening round and quarterfinal matches were forced indoors, as the A-10’s 12 teams competed at both the Kings Point and Sunset Tennis Centers. Play is scheduled to resume at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center on Saturday, April 16 at 8:00AM.
