WASHINGTON – Mike Mahoney, who served as Director of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania since 2005, has been named Senior Associate Commissioner, Strategic Communications and Media Relations for the Atlantic 10 Conference, Commissioner Dan Leibovitz announced Wednesday.
Mahoney will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing the communications initiatives for the Atlantic 10’s 23 sports, with an emphasis on basketball, as well as leading the conference’s overall strategic communications efforts.
“Mike is one of the most respected communications professionals in college athletics. His experience, judgment, and leadership skills will serve the A-10 well,” said Leibovitz. “He will play a critical role in strengthening how we communicate across all the conference’s sports and ensuring our messaging reflects the excellence of our institutions. We are excited to welcome Mike to our team.”
In his position with Penn Athletics, Mahoney worked closely with the department’s 33 varsity sports and was the primary contact for the Quakers’ men’s basketball program.
Prior to Penn, Mahoney spent six years at Northwestern University where he served as the media contact for men’s basketball, football, and women’s lacrosse programs. His professional career began at Dartmouth College, his alma mater, where he was assistant director for six years. Prior to that, he spent one year as a Public Information Intern at the Ivy League office. As an undergraduate, Mahoney served as an intern with USA Basketball.
In addition to his campus work, Mahoney has served as the media coordinator for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Championships, NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional, and NCAA Wrestling Championships. He also oversaw media coordination for the iconic Penn Relays.
Mahoney was recently honored by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) with the prestigious Arch Ward Award for overall excellence in athletic communications. He also received the President’s Award in 2025. He is an 18-time winner of the Fred Stabley Writing Contest, including four stories that were recognized as best in the nation.
Mahoney is a member of the CSC Academic All-America Core Committee, as well as chair of its Division I Cabinet. He was the 2017 recipient of ECAC-SIDA’s Irving T. Marsh Award, presented annually to an ECAC-SIDA member for exhibiting excellence in the field of sports information.
A New Hampshire native, Mahoney earned a degree in English from Dartmouth. He holds a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University.
