TYSONS, Va. – Fourth-seeded George Mason got a gem of an outing from starter Logan Rumberg to survive, with a 9-1 victory over No. 6 Davidson in the consolation bracket of the 2026 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Capital One Park.
The Patriots (29-25) advance in the consolation bracket and will play again Thursday evening in an elimination game against a to be determined opponent. Davidson (25-28) was eliminated from the championship.
Rumberg (7-3) got the win, throwing seven innings with six hits, just one run allowed, and an impressive 11 strikeouts. GM relievers Owen Stewart and Brandon Hsu each threw a hitless inning to close out the win.
Jackson Morse and Jake Butler had two hits apiece, and Owen Clyne tallied two RBI for the Patriots, who slowly built a lead from the fifth inning on, securing with victory with a three-run eighth. An RBI single from Morse and a sacrifice fly from Clyne in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie.
Butler hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth and Matt Westley scored during a seventh-inning rundown. Then in the eighth, Evan Blanchard crushed a homer to left field, driving in three runs.
Davidson starter Wilson Perkins (1-4) went five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in taking the loss. Jamie Daly provided the only multi-hit performance for the ‘Cats and Forrest Lietz, whose third-inning RBI single to left gave Davidson its only run of the game, had one RBI.
Lietz’s hit that plated Matthew Vannoy, erased George Mason’s first run, which came off the bat of Clyne and scored Morse in the top of the third.
