PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Rhode Island won its third straight Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Saturday at a blustery Cooper River Park, claiming gold in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races. It’s the 12
th overall title for the Rams, who earn the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Rhody finished in first with 48 points, followed by George Washington with 43. Fordham scored 40 points to place third, the highest placement for the Bronx Rams since 2019 when they tied for third. La Salle finished fourth with 31 points, the highest placement in the A-10 Championship for the Explorers in league history. Duquesne rounded out the top five in the team scoring with 29 points.
Rhode Island won a record-breakingly fast the Varsity 8 with a time of 6:33.123, the fourth-fastest time in league history, and the fastest since 1998 when UMass rowed a 6:32.10. Fordham’s second place time of 6:36.549 is the fifth-fastest time in league history. GW placed third with a 6:37.349, which is just outside the top five.
The Second Varsity 8 was also fast, with Rhode Island’s winning time of 6:39.501 setting a new A-10 record, and George Washington’s second place finish clocking at 6:43.787, equaling the second-fastest time in league history. Fordham was third in the 2V8 with a time of 6:58.719.
The Revolutionaries won the Varsity 4 with a 7:37.268, the third fastest time in A-10 records. La Salle claimed second at 7:38.792, the fourth fastest time in league history and Duquesne placed third at 7:40.374, which places them sixth all-time in the Atlantic 10.
Rhode Island won the Third Varsity 8 with a non-scoring 7:12.925, the second-fastest time in A-10 history. GW was second with a 7:29.987 and La Salle placed third with an 8:24.109.
George Washington claimed the Second Varsity 4 with a 7:57.668, followed by Duquesne in second place with an 8:00.895. Rhode Island finished third at 8:12.273.
Saint Joseph’s placed sixth overall, while George Mason and Dayton completed the team scoring.
Rhody will advance to the NCAA Championships May 29-31 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Ga.
