WASHINGTON – Vaughn McMeans of George Mason, VCU’s Carson Looney and Richmond coach Adam Decker were named the major Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf award winners. The league released the three superlative awards and the All-Conference Team Tuesday.
McMeans was named Golfer of the Year while Looney was chosen as Rookie of the Year. Decker earned his league-record fifth Coach of the Year honor. The awards were voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches and are based on combined performance during the regular season and at the championship.
McMeans finished seventh at the A-10 Championship with a three-under 213 (70-74-69). The highest-rated player in the league, he holds a Scoreboard Rank of 260 and a scoring average of 70.8. A two-time medalist this season, he had five top-10 finishes and was at par or better in 19 of 30 rounds. A sophomore from Leesburg, Va., McMeans also finished in the top 25 in all but one event this season.
Looney is ranked No. 597 in the Scoreboard rankings, the highest for a freshman in the A-10. He placed second at the A-10 championship with a nine-under 207 (67-71-69). A native of Bethesda, Md., he competed in 11 of 12 events for VCU this season, with 20 rounds of par or better in 33 total rounds. His 72.21 stroke average was the best at VCU this season, and he had two first-place finishes. He also had five top-25 finishes and four top-10 finishes.
Decker led Richmond to its second A-10 men’s golf title with a 10-stroke advantage and three players finishing in the top five at the conference championship. Finishing his 20
th season at the helm of the Spiders, he has led UR to a top-five placement at the A-10 championship each year. A native of Long Island, N.Y., Decker played at Penn State and was an assistant at his alma mater one year before beginning his tenure at Richmond.
McMeans and Looney were also selected to the All-Conference Team as was A-10 medalist and the Championship’s Most Outstanding Rookie Lucas Rizo-Patron. Richmond and VCU each had three players earn All-Conference accolades, with George Mason, George Washington, Loyola Chicago and Rhode Island each claiming one.
