WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson junior Anthony Torreso its Under Armour Baseball Player of the Week. Saint Louis junior Ben Cherico was named Pitcher of the Week and Richmond freshman Evan Wilson captured Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played from May 4-10.
Torreso hit .667 (8-for-12) with a whopping 2.555 OPS (including a 1.833 slugging percentage and a .722 on-base percentage) and had two doubles, four home runs, seven runs and 13 RBI in a series against Rhode Island. A catcher from Stratford, Conn., Toresso also drew five walks and had a stolen base. He hit homers versus Rhody Saturday and added a grand slam on Sunday, part of a six-RBI final day performance.
Cherico threw his second complete game shutout of the season on Friday at Fordham. Cherico allowed just five hits in nine innings with only one extra base hit. He also struck out five while walking just two. The right-hander from Ridgefield, Conn., threw five three-up, three-down innings. This is the fifth time this season he has not allowed any earned runs. Cherico has the second-best ERA in conference play at 2.54.
Wilson slashed 1.000 / 1.000 / 2.333 in just two games, with four RBI and four runs scored. He missed the Friday opener, battling an illness, only to be inserted into the lineup in the ninth on Saturday in game two. An outfielder from Lancaster, Pa., Wilson doubled in the ninth, then hit the game-winning, walk-off grand slam in the 11
th. He had one hit and walked twice in Sunday’s finale, scoring three runs in the final game.
