ST. LOUIS – It took nearly 60 minutes for Saint Louis or Dayton to produce a shot on goal on Friday, but Saint Louis forward Andrew Heckenlaible needed just one opportunity to bury the game-winning goal that lifted No. 2 seed Saint Louis over No. 7 seed Dayton, 1-0 in the A10 Men’s Soccer Tournament Quarterfinals.
With the victory, Saint Louis moves into the semifinal round. The Billikens will host their next match, with the opponent to be determined based on Friday evening’s results. Following the quarterfinal round, teams will be re-seeded ahead of the semifinals.
Saint Louis 1, Dayton 0 – Box Score
Neither team mustered a shot on target in the first half, as both squads remained disciplined defensively. The Billikens and Flyers traded control of possession, but both penalty boxes remained clear of any legitimate scoring threats.
Heckenlaible broke the tie in the 59
th minute. Getting the ball on the left side of the box, he weaved past the Dayton defense before calmly using his left foot to complete the play. The first shot on goal of the game, Heckenlaible’s heroics gave Saint Louis a 1-0 lead.
The Billikens nearly doubled their advantage about 10 minutes later. SLU sophomore Jack DiMaria rifled a free kick shot to the left side of the net, but Dayton goalkeeper Santino Inkpen came up with the save to keep the Flyers in the match.
The Saint Louis defense ensured Dayton would stay off the scoreboard, however, holding the Flyers to two total shots – and not a single attempt on target.
