WASHINGTON — The Atlantic 10 Conference named VCU sophomore Mats Bredschneijder as its Under Armour Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and Saint Joseph’s freshman Jakob Gaudreau Barnes as its Rookie of the Week. VCU junior Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and VCU freshman Viktoria Lackova was named Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced on Wednesday for matches played from Jan. 12 to Jan. 18.
 
Bredschneijder went undefeated last week across two singles matches and two doubles matches, all at the top positions in the VCU lineup. The Oosthuizen, Netherlands native defeated Georgetown’s Arthur O’Sullivan 6-2, 6-4 in VCU’s 6-1 triumph to open the season, before taking down Charlotte’s Ivan Dreycopp 7-6 (13-11), 4-6, 11-9 (1-0) in the Rams’ 4-3 loss on Sunday. He paired up with Erwann Bouchet for doubles victories against both teams, winning 6-2 vs. Georgetown and 6-4 vs. Charlotte.
 
Barnes earned strong singles victories last week, including one of the most pivotal matches of the season thus far. A native of Verdun, Quebec, Barnes defeated Oral Roberts’ Lucas Couy 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles position, moving up to the No. 5 slot the rest of the week. With Saint Joseph’s and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley tied 3-3 on Saturday morning, Barnes bested Loic Young 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 to clinch the Hawks’ first win of the season.
 
Sabando went 3-1 on the weekend, including a win over one of the nation’s top doubles duos. Alongside teammate Mariam Ibrahim at the top doubles position, Sabando defeated the #48 Northwestern tandem of Mika Dagan Fruchtman and Neena Feldman 6-2. The Santa Domingo, Ecuador product led VCU to a 4-0 win over Temple with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Tianna Zhou on Court 3, winning her respective doubles match with Ibrahim 6-1 as well.
 
Lackova earned the first victory of her young collegiate career on Sunday, helping VCU to its 4-0 win against Temple. The Bratislava, Slovakia native teamed up with Sara Alba to take down Mari Christoforidou and Yasmin Costa 6-1 at the No. 3 position.
