RICHMOND, Va.- 2025 has been an illustrious year for Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir. Since the turn of the calendar, the VCU thrower has earned an All-America honor, six Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week awards, Academic All-Conference, a program record, two NCAA championship appearances including a national runner-up, and an A-10 nomination for NCAA Woman of the Year.
Most recently, Hallgrimsdottir has taken her talents to the international stage by qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The event is set to begin on Sept. 13 and will continue through Sept. 21. She is one of 37 competitors who qualified for the hammer throw. The first qualifying round begins on Sept. 14 at 8:00 p.m. EST. If Hallgrimsdottir is one of the top 12 competitors from the qualifying round, she will compete in the World Final on Sept. 15 at 8:00 a.m. EST.
Hallgrimsdottir is one of three athletes to represent Iceland in the competition. In the Icelandic Championships, Hallgrimsdottir shattered the national record with a 71.38m throw which won her the national championship and secured her spot in Tokyo. The throw would have been the longest hammer throw by any NCAA athlete during the 2025 season and she defeated the previous national record by 0.97m. The previous record holder was a 70.47m throw by Elisabet Runarsdottir at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2024.
In addition, she also ranks 38th globally in the hammer throw and this will be her first appearance in the World Championships. The World Athletics Championships is one of the biggest global sporting events as more than 2000 athletes from 200+ countries compete. Tokyo will host the event for the first time since 1992. Hallgrimsdottir's events can be viewed in the United States on World Athletics+ with some select events being broadcasted through Peacock, CNBC, and USA Network.
