TYSONS, Va. -- No. 2 George Mason defeated fourth-seeded Davidson, 5–1 Friday at Capital One Park in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship consolation bracket semifinals.
George Mason (39–20) will play the loser of Rhode Island and Saint Louis Friday evening in the consolation bracket final , with a trip to the championship final on the line. Davidson suffered its second setback of the double-elimination tournament and was eliminated (27–29).
All four of George Mason’s early runs came in the top of the third inning. Drew Canody scored on on an error play that began with a steal by Owen Clyne. James Quinn-Irons followed with a single that brought in Clyne. Later in the inning, Lucas Alberti hit a double down the left-field line, scoring Jake Butler and Quinn-Irons to give the Patriots a 4–0 lead.
Davidson got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Torreso singled, advanced on a hit by Nick Jouras, and scored on a single by Chase Schuchart to cut the deficit to 4–1.
George Mason added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Jonny Wall reached base and was driven in on a single to left by Andrew Raymond, making it 5–1.
Sam Lavin earned the win for George Mason, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Gardner Meeks pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run. Davidson starter Weber took the loss, allowing four unearned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings with two walks. Relievers Sam Yochum and Isaac Fix combined for 6.1 innings, giving up one run on seven hits.
