TYSONS, Va. — Fourth-seeded Davidson used a seven-run seventh inning to break open a deadlocked game and top No. 7 Dayton, 9–4, on Thursday night at Capital One Park in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.
The Wildcats improved to 27–28 and will face No. 2 George Mason in the consolation bracket semifinals Friday morning, while the Flyers (27-32) were eliminated from the championship.
Davidson got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Jouras drove in the first run with a single to center, and a balk brought home Anthony Toresso. Dayton responded in the bottom of the fourth when Adin Zorn led off with a solo home run to right center. The Flyers then took advantage of a hit-by-pitch, a bases-loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly to take a 4–2 lead on runs by Mason Dobie, Ryan MacDougall and Bobby Stang.
The game stayed close until the top of the seventh, when Davidson sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. Ethan Schuchart tied the game with a two-run double to left center. John Cotrone followed with a crushing three-run home run to left, giving the Wildcats a 7–4 lead.
Jacob Vokal (1-2) picked up the win in relief for Davidson, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. Andrew Katz earned the save with three perfect innings to close out the game. Rondeau (2-1) took the loss for Dayton after allowing five runs in just over an inning of work.
Jouras finished 4-for-5 with two RBI, Cotrone drove in three with his home run, and Schuchart had two RBI. Zorn led Dayton with a 2-for-4 night that included his solo home run.
