Cunningham, Early Hot Bats Send Billikens Into Second Round Winners Bracket

TYSONS, Va. – Josh Cunningham allowed just three hits over six innings and No. 3 Saint Louis exploded for seven runs in the first two innings to beat sixth-seeded Fordham, 10-2 Tuesday in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship first round at Capital One Park.

The Billikens (32-34) advance to face No. 2 George Mason at 3:00 pm Wednesday. Fordham will play No. 7 Dayton at 7:00 pm Wednesday in an elimination game.

Brenden Stressler singled to score Moore to open the scoring in the first inning for SLU, and then Max McGuire cranked a two-run home run to score Stressler and give the Billikens a 3-0 lead.  An Riley Iffrig double plated two more in the top of the second, followed by Stressler, who matched McGuire with his own two-run shot and Saint Louis was quickly out to a 7-0 lead.

Both teams scattered single-run innings through the rest of the game. Fordham  (25-32) got RBI hits from Taylor Kirk and Tommy Markey, scoring Madden Ocko and Reid Lapekas. Kirk was the only Ram with multiple hits. Aiden Down (3-7) took the loss, allowing three run on four hits.

Iffrig went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Saint Louis offense. Stressler was 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBI. Cunningham (6-2) struck out six en route to the win.
