PENNSAUKEN, N.J. -- Rhode Island claimed it 11
th Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Saturday at Cooper River Park, winning the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 to finish with 52 points.
Led by A-10 Coach of the Year Shelagh Donohoe, the Rams earn the A-10 ‘s Automatic Bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship. Donohoe won her 10
th Coach of the Year honor.
George Washington finished in second place with 48 points, placing second in all three scoring events. Massachusetts was third with 38 points, winning the Varsity 4 event as well as the two non-scoring races the Third Varsity 8 and the Varsity 4.
Rhode Island won the Varsity 8 with a 6:40.695, followed by GW at 6:43.853 and Saint joseph’s at 6:46.182. With just one point separating the top three teams heading into the V8, the race, which was less than a six-second margin from first to third, was the deciding race for the title.
URI clocked a 6:46.273 to win the Second Varsity 8, with the Revolutionaries at 6:49.073 to place second and the Minutewomen in third at 6:52.859.
UMass’ win in the Varsity 4 came at 7:45.689 with George Washington in second at 8:02.171 and Rhody placing third at 8:08.436.
The two non-scoring races both went to UMass with a 7:33.515 in the Third Varsity 8. GW was also second in this race with a 7:46.051. Rhode Island placed third at 7:49.351. The Minutewomen’s Second Varsity 4 time was 8:16.692. Duquesne place second at 8:34.614 and GW crossed the finish line third at 8:48.480.
Saint Joseph’s placed fourth with 35 points, followed by La Salle in fifth with 31 points. Fordham (28) and Duquesne (20) were sixth and seventh and George Mason and Dayton rounded out the team finishes respectively.
In addition to Coach of the Year, the A-10 also honored 20 student-athletes as All-Conference, with 11 on the first team and nine on the second team as listed below.
