WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Duquesne junior Corrine Webb as its Under Armour Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week while Rhode Island senior Casey Phelps received Defensive Player of the Week. Rhode Island sophomore Caralie Basuel was tabbed as Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Monday, are for games played Feb. 17-23.
Webb had a pair of four-goal outings, totaling eight in a two-game week for the Dukes. In the Youngstown State win, the attacker from Ridgel, Md., scored three of her four goals in the second half including back-to-back late in the fourth quarter with her final score proving to be the game winner. She added another four tallies and a caused turnover in a loss to Saint Francis.
A goalie from Olney, Md., Phelps was in goal for the first week of Rhody’s inaugural season. She made 12 saves to pick up the first win in NCAA Division I history over Merrimack. Following that season-opening performance, the Hofstra transfer allowed just one goal in Rhody’s dominating win over CCSU. Phelps had another dozen saves in the game against Rider, wrapping up the three-game opening week for the Rams.
Basuel, an attacker from Fairfax, Va., was dominant, scoring seven goals to lead the Rams to win their first NCAA Division I lacrosse match in their inaugural season opener against Merrimack. Basuel etched herself in history as the first-ever scorer with her first goal against the Warriors in the opening minutes. In Rhody’s three-game week, Basuel led the team with 11 goals, adding a pair against CCSU and Rider. She recorded 20 draw controls and added five ground balls in the debut week for the Rams.
