Richmond, VCU Share Field Hockey Regular Season Title; Spiders Top Seed for Championship

WASHINGTON — Richmond and VCU field hockey are Atlantic 10 Conference Regular-Season Co-Champions. The Spiders will serve as the No. 1 seed for the 2025 A-10 Field Hockey Championship. The championship begins Thursday and concludes Saturday at Crenshaw Field in Richmond, Va. 
 
It’s the tenth regular season title for Richmond (11-7 overall) and first since 2015. The Spiders claimed the top seed by virtue of a 2-1, double overtime win over VCU Friday. Both teams finish the regular season at 5-1 in league play. VCU, which will be the No. 2 seed, finished the regular season with a 13-4 overall record. It’s the second regular season title for the Rams, who also won in the spring of 2021 during the 2020 season that was moved due to the COVID pandemic.
 
Richmond’s Clara Larripa and VCU’s Morena Macera are tied for the second in the league with 16 goals. Larripa is fourth in assists with seven, and first in points with 39. UR’s Alexa Derr is also second in the league in assists. Macera is first in game-winning goals with six and she’s second in points with 37. VCU keeper Clements leads the league in goals against average at .933 and shutouts with eight.
 
Richmond, the championship host, will open the championship against fourth-seeded Davidson in the first semifinal, Thursday at 11:00 am. The Wildcats are 3-3 in league play and 9-8 overall and are making their second appearance in the championship. They also qualified in 2015 and faced Richmond, falling 2-1 in the semifinals. Davidson’s Sib Naaktgeboren leads in the league in scoring with 18 goals and is tied with Macera with six game-winning goals to lead the league.
 
Saint Joseph’s, the defending champion and 2024 national runner-up will be the third seed. The Hawks are 4-2 in league play and 9-9 overall and will face second-seeded VCU in the second semifinal at 2:00 pm. Ava Smith is fourth in the league in goals with 14 and points with 29 for the Hawks.
 
Thursday’s semifinal winners will meet Saturday at noon for the A-10 Championship match. The winner of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship will earn the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid and advance to the NCAA Tournament.  All three games of the A-10 Field Hockey Championship will be broadcast on ESPN+.
