WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond junior Maggie Doogan as its Under Armour Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, her second award of the season. Duquesne freshman Mackenzie Blackford was named the Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played on January 6-12.
Doogan had a standout week for a Richmond team that defeated two of the top teams in the league, George Mason and Davidson, averaging 34.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 5 apg to match a 61.8 FG%, 44.4 3FG% and a 94.4 FT%, only missing one free throw through two games (17-18). The junior finished the game against George Mason shooting 12-for-18 from the floor, 3-for-6 from deep, and 10-for-11 from the free throw line for a career-high 37 points, tied for fourth-most in Spider women's basketball history. The Broomall, Pa. native finished the night matching a career-high eight assists, four rebounds, one block and a steal. Against Davidson, Doogan again led the team with 26 points and moved into Richmond's top 20 leading scorers. She passed Johanna McKnight (1,106 points) and Saona Chapman (1,100 points) to claim the No. 20 spot on the all-time scoring list with 1,121 career points. Doogan was just shy of a double-double with a team-high seven rebounds and added two assists and one steal to her stat line.
Blackford enjoyed a prolific week, helping the Dukes capture a pair of A-10 road wins while posting back-to-back double figure performances. She averaged 16.5 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting an impressive 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from three-point range. The freshman began the week by carding 13 points and four rebounds in a win at league leading Saint Joseph’s, finishing 3-of-5 (60.0 percent) from behind the arc while going a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Solon, Ohio native ended the week by leading the team and posting a career-best 20 points on 6-of-10 (60.0 percent) shooting from behind the arc in a victory at George Washington. Blackford finished the game 7-of-11 (62.5 percent) shooting from the field while totaling a rebound and one assist. She has netted double figures in three straight games while sitting 10th in the league in triples per game (2.0) and total three-pointers (32).
